The original arcade version of Turtles in Time has seen a few re-releases (including one on GameCube), but the Super Nintendo version remains exclusive to that platform. While the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video game franchise may not be as highly regarded as it once was, those original games still hold a strong place in the hearts of many gamers. The track’s pace perfectly matches the level. The second you hear a track like “Sewer Surfin’,” you know what to expect from the level, and there’s something very interesting about that. The role of music in video games is often so crucial, because it affects the player’s psyche. A sequel to the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) arcade game, it is a scrolling beat em up type game based mainly on the 1987 TMNT animated series. What I really like about this track is that it captures the fun of the level, and the game in general. The Rat King has invaded the sewers, and players will have to zip through the waterways beneath Manhattan in order to stop him. “Sewer Surfin'” takes the turtle teens back to the place they call home. To this day, the title remains one of the most well regarded licensed games of all time, and an unquestioned classic of the SNES era. In 1992, Super Nintendo hosted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, an enhanced port of the similarly titled arcade game. At the peak of the popularity of the heroes in a half shell, they appeared in three games on NES, all of which received critical acclaim, with sales to match. Our younger readers might not realize this, but the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were once synonymous with Nintendo systems.
